“Esposa y Querida”
- Orquesta Lebron
(Puerto Rico) |
The
orquestra that defined what it's all about - salsa y control -
delivering beautiful and elegant salsa. Not-political correct lyrics
suggesting what "should be every mans law" to keep a wife and a lover,
esposa y querida.

“Con Su Permiso”
- Louie Ramirez
(Puerto Rico) |
This song was also recorded by the great Hector Rivera, this is a
slightly ruffer version that midways changes and takes another turn
after a killer timbales solo from Louie. Good vocals by a young Ray de la Paz, from the 1983 album "Mi Fruto" |
"Guajira Tipica"
- Tipica '73
(New York) |
One
of my favourite groups La Tipica '73 with a wonderful cha cha/guajira.
Whatever these guys touched it was pure quality and flavour., master of
all styles, from a merciless guaracha to a silk smooth guajira.
From the great 1976 album "Rumba Caliente". Buy it here.

“Candela”
– Chuito and his Latin Uniques (New York) |
The title may not tell you much, but this track is from the hard to get
material of Chuito Velez, a latin pianist that was mainly into latin
soul/funk in the late 60's. Candela is a funky son-guaguanco with a
great piano solo from Chuito. From
the late 60's album “Chuito Velez From The Street”.

“Llego Tete”
– Teresa Garcia Caturlas
(Cuba) |
One of many Cuban divas with a great voice, Teresa Garcia Caturla may not be the most famous, but boy is she a real rumbera! "Llego
Tete" is a great son from the old school, no timba influence on this
lady! For the casineros bred on timba this won't even sound "Cuban".
From
the strongly recomended 2003 album "Llego Tete". Available here! |
“Pa' Que Me Criticas”
- Dan Den
(Cuba) |
Definitly one of my favourite Cuban bands, Juan Carlos Alfonso y Su Dan
Den! One of the few cuban bands that resisted the timba-fication of all
cuban dance music in the 1990's. Dan Den has a trombone led powerful
sound with a typical Cuban funk-feeling to the music. From the 2002
album
"Dale Campana" - buy it here. |
“Llora Como Yo”
- Hector Rivera
(New York) |
One
of the true great composers, arrangers and band leaders of the salsa
movement in New York, pianist Hector Rivera. He sadly never gained the
wide public recognition he deserved. This is a real heavy-hitter of a
rumba-son. Starts out with a guaguanco before he releases the horses,
se soltaron los caballos! A song about being able to recongnize a true
love and not let go of it. From the 1972 album "Para Mi Gente". This is a great album. Buy it here.
|
“Muevete Pa' Qui”
–Elio Reve jr y Su Charangon
(Cuba) |
Elito
Reve was just in Oslo and delivered a nice concert. He carries on the
torch from his father, although lately a little to timbafided for my
taste, this one is a nice little changui from the 2000 album "Changui en la Casa de Nora". Click here to check it out.
|
"Señora Ley”
- Conjunto Clasico
(New York) |
A
nice classic from the famous New York based band Conjunto Clasico. With
Tito Nieves on vocals, what a great sonero, that sadly started doing
salsa monga when leaving the band. From the 1985 album "Llego La Ley",
available at Descarga.
|
“Cuando Se Acabe La Rumba”
– David Cedeño
(New Jersey) |
What do we do cuando se acaba la rumba? Hopefully la rumba no se acaba,
but New Jersey's David Cedeño knows what he wants when the
party's over; go home with his girl! A great good-feel salsa tune
straight out, from the album Afinado y Afincando" - you can buy the
whole track and album here. |
